During this experiment the birds were kept resting -as far as possible -at a temperature of ca. 19°C. This metabolism at rest is abt. 150 Cal/day for a guillemot of abt. 700 gr. which works out at 180 Cal/day for a bird of 925 g. This is 2.5 x the theoretical standard metabolism. At temperatures over 5°C metabolism is probably not correlated with temperature. The fat contents in the faeces strongly depend on those in the consumed fish. Digestion efficiency is over 80%. During starvation a daily loss of 2,5-3% of the body weight is experienced from the second day onwards. The net energy consumption of the birds in the outer cage where they can dive, fly etc. is ca. 260 Cal/day for an average weight of 925 gr. This is partly explained by the greater activity. Estimated energy costs for various activities are given. In nature the gross energy consumption is estimated at 350-400 Cal/day. This corresponds to 175-275 g. of fish.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het rustmetabolisme yan zeekoeten (<i>Uria aalge</i>) is bepaald door de in de uitwerpselen uitgescheiden energie af te trekken van de met het voedsel opgenomen energie. De vogels verkeerden hierbij zoveel mogelijk in rust bij een temperatuur van ong. 19°C. Het rustmetabolisme is voor een zeekoet van ong. 700 gram 150 Cal/dag. Omgerekend voor een vogel van 925 gram is dit ong. 180 Cal/dag. Dit is 2.5 x het theoretische standaardmetabolisme. Het metabolisme is bij temperaturen boven 5°C waarschijnlijk niet gecorreleerd met de temperatuur. Het vetgehalte van de uitwerpselen is sterk afhankelijk van het vetgehalte van de geconsumeerde vis. De verteringsefficiency is ruim 80%. Bij hongeren treedt vanaf de tweede dag een dagelijks gewichtsverlies op van 2.5-3.0% van het lichaamsgewicht. Het netto energieverbruik van de vogels in de buitenkooi waar duiken, vliegen etc. mogelijk is, is ong. 260 Cal/dag (gem. gewicht 925 gr.) Dit wordt ten dele verklaard door de grotere activiteit. De geschatte energetische kosten voor de verschillende activiteiten worden gegeven. Geschat wordt dat in de natuur het bruto energieverbruik 350-400 Cal/dag bedraagt.
