With the use of a new quantitative method based on a relation between the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate in mineral media and the activity of the inoculated mud, a high activity in the surface layer of a vertical sediment profile could be demonstrated in only one case. In all cases a slight activity of the concerned bacteria in all depths was found, and it was concluded that the bacteria could move to higher depths by active migration.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het voorkomen en de vertikale verdeling van kleurloze chemolithotrofe zwavelbacteriën in het sediment van het Balgzand werd onderzocht. Minerale media en thiosulfaat als energiebron werden met wadmodder beënt en er werd een verband gevonden tussen de geënte hoeveelheid wadmodder en de oxydatiesnelheid van het thiosulfaat. Via het gevonden verband werd de activiteit van de onderzochte bacteriën in enkele sedimentprofielen onderzocht en in één geval kon een hoge aktiviteit in de oppervlaktelaag van het sediment aangetoond worden.
