The high iron contents in the Thames estuary are probably explained by release of Fe<sup>2+</sup> in the estuary, subsequent oxydation to Fe³+ and the formation of iron coatings on the sand grains. The central area of high iron content, off Harwich, is probably caused by the admixture of reworked Pliocene deposits. In the northern area the number of samples is too low to reach any conclusions about the origin of the high iron contents.","AbstractOtherLang":"Het ijzergehalte in de fractie 250-315 u van het bodemmateriaal leidt tot een driedeling van het beschouwde gebied. De hoge ijzergehaltes van het zuidelijke gedeelte moeten waarschijnlijk verklaard worden door oplossing van Fe<sup>2+</sup> in het Thames estuarium, gevolgd door oxydatie tot Fe³+ en vorming van ijzerhuidjes om de zanddeeltjes in zee. In het centrale deel ten oosten van Harwich is het hoge ijzergehalte vermoedelijk aan een oost-west verlopende pliocene dagzoom te danken.
