Production is ranked fourth in Latin America following Chile, Brazil and Peru. The FAO production records started in 1987 and recorded 20 tonnes, wich subsequently rose to 2 200 tonnes in 1990. In1993 the production declined to 1 053 tonnes and then rose again to 2 500 in 1995 and 3 038 tonnes in 1997, following this production declined again to about 1 500 tonnes where it remained stable until 2005. Production derives mainly from the Pacific oyster (<i>Crassostrea gigas</i>) and to a lesser degree the Cortez oyster (<i>Crassostrea corteziensis</i>), the Mediterranean mussel (<i>Mytilus galloprovincialis</i>), the Catarina scallop (<i>Argopecten ventricosus</i>) and the pearl oyster (<i>Pteria sterna</i>). Other emerging species such as the Pacific lion´s paw scallop (<i>Nodipecten subnodosus</i>) and the penshell (<i>Atrina maura</i>), have been produced commercially but production levels have not been continuous. In this paper, an explanation of the variations in production is given as well as an insight to the constraints that have restrained the development of bivalve aquaculture, regardless of the efforts made by aquaculturists and Mexican research institutes.","AbstractOtherLang":"Se presenta una revisión de la acuicultura de moluscos bivalvos en México. En este país la acuicultura de bivalvos se realiza casi exclusivamente en las costas del Pacífico de Baja California y en el Golfo de California y ocupa el cuarto lugar en América Latina después de Chile, Brasil y Perú. Los datos de producción de FAO inician en 1987 con 20 toneladas y posteriormente la producción se incrementa a 2 200 toneladas en 1990. En 1993 la producción declina a 1 053 toneladas y posteriormente se incrementa en 1995 a 2 500 toneladas y a 3 038 toneladas en 1997. Después de ese año la producción decrece nuevamente a un promedio de 1 500 toneladas anuales, cifra que se ha mantenido hasta el 2005. La producción se basa prácticamente en la ostra del Pacífico <i>Crassostrea gigas</i> y en menor grado en el ostión de placer (<i>Crassostrea corteziensis</i>), el mejillón (<i>Mytilus galloprovincialis</i>), la almeja Catarina <i>Argopecten ventricosus</i> y en la ostra perlera <i>Pteria sterna</i>. Se han realizado producciones a nivel comercial de especies emergentes como la almeja mano de león <i>Nodipecten subnodosus</i> y de callo de hacha <i>Atrina maura</i>, pero la producción no se ha mantenido en el tiempo.
