Simple models can predict this dilution effect leaving a much smaller variance against which to test for pollution events or gradual changes. An efficient method based on control charts may then be used to test for significant departures from historical performances so enabling a relatively rapid response to be made to undesirable changes. Cumulative sum techniques may also be used to test for inconsistencies between model and calibration data leading to better prediction and therefore more sensitive control of estuarine pollution.
