Cruises in the Bristol Channel provided data which were used as initial and boundary conditions in the model and as a verification of the simulation results. Most of the parameter values for the rate equations of the model were derived from the literature, although some were obtained by experimentation; the derivation of parameter values for primary production is described. The simulation results of GEMBASE for 1973 to 1975 are realistic and in good agreement with the field data for that period.
