Clearance rate increases with flow rate up to some threshold. Food concentration in the range 40-1185 µg/Cl and relative column dimensions have no effect on clearance rate measured at a suitable flow rate. Following transfer of each species from ambient temperature (15 °C) to 10 °C and 20 °C clearance rate was found to be temperature dependent after an initial period of 3 days. After this initial period Q<sub>10</sub> values over 20 days were 1.5+/-0.2 for <i>O. edulis</i> and 3.3+/- 0.6 for <i>C. gigas</i> . Weight exponents were 0.74 for <i>O. edulis</i> and 0.68 for <i>C. gigas</i> . Models which predict flow requirement between 10 °C and 20 °C to give 90% clearance by each species were derived by integrating the data relating clearance rate to temperature and body size. For <i>O. edulis</i> FR = (0.47 + 0.04T) LW<sup>-0.26</sup> and for <i>C. gigas</i> FR = (-0.92 + 0.17T) LW<sup>-0.32</sup> , where FR is flow requirement (ml/min/g), LW is live weight (g) and T is temperature (C).
