S<sup>-1</sup> (26 knots). It can be launched and recovered by non-scientist crew-members while the vessel is under way. It is used to carry instrumentation to sample plankton continuously and to measure chlorophyll (range 0 to 100 mg.m <sup>-3</sup>), radiant energy (range 0 to 1000 µ E.m <sup>-2</sup>.s<sup>-1</sup>) temperature (range 0 to 30 °C) and salinity (range 32 to 37 ppt.), all of which are recorded, with the measurement of depth (range 0 to 100 m), by a miniature digital tape recorder, with a resolution of 0.1% of full scale.
