Recent importations into the Netherlands of oysters from the eastern Solent area of southern Britain were found to contain attached individuals of <i>S. muticum</i> . The recently discovered Dutch populations of <i>Sargassum</i> most probably developed independently from fertile drift material, the documented find of which preceded the occurrence of attached plants.
