The alga was discovered in June 1980 in the western part of non-tidal saline Lake Grevelingen over a stretch of 6 km of stone sea-walls and rip-rap dams. Total biomass was negligible. The potential danger of the highly competitive <i>S. muticum</i> for the existing population of <i>Zostera marina</i> L. in Lake Grevelingen is discussed.
