In the south western part of this salt water basin in a period without wind and simultaneously a sharp rise in air temperature stratification in the water may occur in the deeper parts of the basin. When a thermocline has been formed, the exchange of water and oxygen between hypolimnion and epilimnion is being reduced considerably. Biological and chemical oxygen demand may then lead to oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion. This article shows that under controlled circumstances the water quality was considerable improved by artificial destratification.
