The bioluminescence is not bacterial in origin. Unlike that of several shallow water apogonids, it does not depend upon <i>Vargula</i> luciferin. <i>Florenciella lugubris</i> has bioluminescent oesophageal diverticula and is able to eject a pulse of luminescent material from beneath the operculum.
