The compositional changes in the surface film and the organic materials in the water below were investigated. The degradation products were isolated and analyzed. They were found to be primarily aromatic and aliphatic acids, and to a lesser extent alcohols, aldehydes and ketones with the same number of carbon atoms as the original hydrocarbons.
