Data from 221 trips made by scientific technicians on tuna vessels of the international fleet were used to produce the estimates. These trips include 179 IATTC trips and 42 US National Marine Fisheries Service trips. They represent a sample coverage of 40.4% of all trips with fishing activity in 1988, and were distributed as follows: Mexico 83, USA (IATTC) 42, USA (NMFS) 42, Venezuela 24, Ecuador 11, Vanuatu 9, Panama 6, Spain 3 and El Salvador 1. The method used was ratio-estimation, based on mortality-per-set (MPS) and mortality-per-ton (MPT) ratios. A stratification scheme based on areas, species/stocks and flags was used to produce the estimates. The total mortality figures were 78,927 using the MPS ratio and 84,881 using the MPT ratio.
