Five species have been found which are bound to the saline environment: <i>Ameronothrus nigrofemoratus, Ameronothrus schneideri, Hermannia subglabra, Oribatella arctica litoralis</i> and <i>Punctoribates quadrivertex</i>. They are characterized as halophilous. The distribution pattern of the oribatids was studied in relation to the communities of higher plants. In saltmarshes <i>Ameronothrus nigrofemoratus, A. schneideri</i> and <i>Punctoribates quadri- vertex</i> are characteristic of <i>Puccinellion maritimae</i> vegetations, <i>Hermannia subglabra</i> of <i>Armerion maritimae</i> vegetations and <i>Oribatella arctica litoralis</i> of <i>Puccinellio-Spergularion</i> and some <i>Armerion</i> vegetations. The lack of <i>Ameronothrus</i> species is the only considerable difference between the oribatid faunas of salt-marshes and saline areas on the landward side of dikes. The extent to which non-halophilous species invade saline areas differs.
