Ammonia- and nitrite concentrations were high compared to 1960-1962, mainly as a result of a greater mineralization in the area. The increase of mineralization probably is a consequence of the increase of organic matter from the adjacent North Sea accumulated in the Wadden Sea. In the shallow eastern part of the Dutch Wadden Sea ammonia concentrations are more dominating compared to the western part, as a result of the greater mineralization and formation of ammonia on one hand and the lack of a considerable freshwater input with high nitrate concentration on the other hand.
