During these 30 years enormous changes have taken place in the morphology and hydrology of this estuarine system. Many habitats were destructed because of the damming of several sea arms. Tidal influence disappeared from a large part of the area or was reduced in other parts. Nearly all indigenous amphipods of the area have suffered severely under these changes. The only species to profit were the recently introduced <i>Gammarus tigrinus</i> and <i>Corophium curvispinum</i>.
