The fish were placed on different backgrounds, photographed and the photographs scanned on transparent tracings. The distribution of distinct chromatophore spots in the skin of the ocular side appears permanent and predictable, although some spots are often not visible due to aggregation. It is suggested that a limited range of preset chromatophore stimulation patterns is available from which the fish \"selects\" the one closest to the current background patterning.
