The conditions of incubation were shown to be very important, especially for reference groups (without sulphide) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. To prevent artefacts a large incubation volume is needed, and the addition of antibiotics or buffer is suggested. The composition of sulphide media was less critical in this respect. The smallest animals had the lowest tolerance for sulphide. Worms of less than 0,05g did not survive for 30 hours, while worms of more than 2 g survived for 90 hours or longer.
