The water permeability of the mantle tissue was generaly correlated with the habitat of the organism, permeability decreasing with increasing height above the sublittoral zone. Evidence is presented that a given intertidal lamellibranch species, <i>Mytilus edulis</i>, is capable of altering its tissue water permeability when presented with changes in external osmolality.
