J.","Englishabstract":"Oxygen uptake by the brown shrimp, <i>Crangon crangon</i> (L.), from the Dutch Wadden Sea was measured in relation to body size and temperature. Simultaneously, motile activity was recorded  to investigate its metabolic consequences. Data on O<sub>2</sub> uptake were obtained in a flow-through respirometer under almost natural conditions. At night the overall O<sub>2</sub> demand was found to be enhanced due to increased nocturnal activity. During daytime <i>Crangon</i> remains buried in the sand. Both standard and active metabolism showed to be strongly temperature dependent. Moreover, the influence of temperature on energy metabolism is related to body weight. Juveniles show a better temperature tolerance than adults, the adults suffering considerable mortalities at high temperatures.
