Leaves were incubated in the laboratory in tanks with normal sea water and with biologically inactivated sea water. In the active medium and in the field, a distinct diphasic decay was observed. During the first 13 to 17 days the losses of dry weight and total carbon amounted to approximately 20% of the original quantity. Nitrogen and phosphorus dropped to about 30% and 60% of the original values respectively, both in the active and the inactive laboratory series, in the first 13 days. The rapid loss has been ascribed to a leaching process.
