These constrains are sometimes obvious, but could also impact the vessel design indirectly in a strange and unexpected way. The task of the designer is to anticipate and fulfill these limitations together with the owner’s requirements, and achieve a “good vessel” that complies with the best of engineering logic. This paper discusses the preliminary design process and introduces a procedure for the assessment of optimal vessel characteristics for a specific waterway. It also introduces some new coefficients to rank the inland container vessel abilities, and compares them to the seagoing ships.
