The bivalve community is dominated by <i>Cerastoderma edule</i> (L.) (biomass, B=17-66g ash-free dry wt m<sup>-2</sup>; production, P=20-71gm<sup>-2</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>) and <i>Mercenaria mercenaria</i> (L.) (B=8-50gm<sup>-2</sup>; P = 4-14 gm<sup>-2</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>), although <i>Mytilus edulis</i> L. (B=4-5gm<sup>-2</sup>), <i>Venerupis decussat</i> (L.) (B=0.4-2gm<sup>-2</sup>) and <i>V. aurea</i> (Gemlin) B=0.6-1gm<sup>-2</sup>) are locally common. Total macrofaunal biomass (190gm<sup>-2</sup>) and production (220gm<sup>-2</sup>)yr<sup>-1</sup>) at Hamble appear to be higher than other comparable sites, although similar to mussel beds.
