The chemical and physical characteristics of dichlorvos and associated chemicals are discussed in the light of their implications for: the efficacy of treatment, safety to the target organism, worker safety, consumer safety, and environmental impact. The development of alternative chemical treatments and the difficulties associated with some of these new potential treatments are outlined.
