From these over 120 benthic invertebrate species have been identified, six of which are regular echinoids, four belonging to the genus <i>Echinus</i> and one each to the genera <i>Cidaris</i> and <i>Psammechinus</i>. Three species, <i>Echinus elegans, E. tenuispinus</i> and <i>Cidaris cidaris</i> appear to be restricted to the edge of the continental shelf. <i>Echinus esculentus</i> and <i>Psammechinus miliaris</i> are shallow water species. <i>Psammechinus</i> appears to be endemic to the southern North Sea whilst <i>E. esculentus</i> is commonest in shallow Scottish waters.
