The results of the two methods applied to sediment cores at one location proved significantly different, with the <i>in situ</i> measurement showing the higher rates of oxygen uptake. Laboratory calibration experiments of the two methods showed that the stainless steel respiration chamber caused serious artefacts in the measurements. In contact with the sediment, stainless steel has a strongly negative potential against a saturated calomel electrode, so that the stainless steel bell-jar is acting as a cathode upon which the oxygen in the enclosed volume of water if the bell-jar is reduced. The reaction, detectable in changes of O2 concentration, pH and alkalinity, is also well known from polarographic techniques and explains most of the differences in oxygen loss found between the two methods applied in the laboratory, as well as between <i>in situ</i> measurements and shipboard incubations.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"A common artefact in estimates of benthic community respiration caused by the use of stainless steel","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-12-10 01:33:01.897972","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":1989,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2019-07-05","DateCreate":"2001-08-02","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:A1989T718100001","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":14718,"PubliDate":1989,"Pagination":"1-6","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"23","Issue":"1","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":44573,"SerRR":"Netherlands Journal of Sea Research.
