The relationship of these structures to the size of the food has been studied, measuring distances between filtration structures and comparing these with the ingestion of food particles of different sizes. The morphological study was made in gill rakers examined by scanning electron microscopy, quantitative experiments about the ingestion of particles of known sizes were carried out on <i>M. auratus</i> with an electronic particle counter. The ingestion of particulate material has been qualitatively controlled for <i>M. chelo</i>. The first results indicate several structural differences between the species studied and also a hierarchy in the gill rakers distances, between the adult individuals of the four species. The minimal size of ingested particles is very close to the minimal distance between processes of the gill rakers of the fifth branchial arch, except for <i>M. saliens</i>.
