In the immediate vicinity of the farm and up to a distance of 15m, the sediment was highly reductive and the water overlying the sediment was depleted in oxygen. There was an azoic zone directly beneath and up to the edge of the cages and an impoverished macrofauna dominated by <i>Capitella capitata</i> up to a distance of 3m. Localized hypernutrification of the water column was observed around the farm but there was no evidence of an enhancement in phytoplankton standing crop. These results have been used to formulate simple modes to predict the scale of effect of salmon farming in a given location.
