Restricting to major questions, one needs know the level of contamination of prey and predator, the rate of entry from food or directly from water, the rate of loss, the possible effects of abiotic factors (chemical speciation, partition of the metal between water column and suspended particulate matter, temperature,, salinity, oxygen content, etc.). Toxicity must be evaluated at all levels including man and terrestrial animals. The task seems enormous and laboratory experiments only give a partial answer. However, they should be planned with the aim to understand the general scheme and to probe real systems for assessment, asking pertinent questions.
