Organisms respond to excess Ca<sup>2+</sup> in the environment by releasing large quantities of Ca<sup>2+</sup>-affine organic matter. Such organic matter appears to participate in foam formation in coastal seas. In the open ocean it facilitates the formation and stabilization of macroflocs.
