The aim of this study was to assess experimentally the effects of tidal manipulation on the numbers and condition of intertidal benthic animals. Permanent submersion did not affect the benthic animals. Most species suffered heavily from drainage, irrespective of an extra supply of tap water. The smaller animals without shells, such as anemones and small polychaetes, were the most susceptible to drainage, gastropods the least. The mortality rate was highest during the summer, somewhat lower in spring and lowest in autumn and winter.
