This comparison showed that reasonable predictions of the vertical structure of the turbulence in a tidally-mixed shelf sea can be made from measurements of water-current speed and wind speed. The model provides an estimate of the bottom drag coefficient <i>C<sub>d</sub></i>. This estimate is based upon measurements in the outer layer of the water column in contrast to the usual <i>C<sub>d</sub></i> values derived from the roughness-lengths obtained from extrapolations of the logarithmic velocity profiles close to the bottom. In an additional experiment the turbulence was measured in a water column with a growing benthic boundary layer just after the turn of the tide.
