The leading physical process is vertical mixing, through its control on the supply of nutrients essential for growth and on the irradiance experienced by phytoplankton cells. These two processes comprise a simple explanation for enhanced primary production in the vicinity of fronts. Increased understanding can be obtained, for example, from further consideration of the possible mechanisms of nutrient supply.
