The chlorophyll a distribution showed a pronounced maximum (with concentrations sometimes greater than 2 mg/m³) at depths ranging from 40 to 90 m. Primary production of the water column was estimated in some of the transects with the <sup>14</sup>C method, using simulated <i>in situ</i> incubators. The amount of carbon fixed per unit volume per hour showed generally a peak at the level of the deep chlorophyll maximum, but primary production there appeared to be light-limited and productivity indices were low when compared with those of the surface layers. Total carbon fixation for the water column ranged from 100 to 300 mg C/m²/day. The phytoplankton ofthe chlorophyll maximum contributed up to 30% of the total productivity of the water column.
