In order to test the effect of different chemical treatments on the biodegradation of stranded oil a basic experimental design of four field test sites was established. Oil contamination of the sediments resulted in an initial decrease in bacterial numbers of both total heterotrophs and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria followed by a marked bacterial growth. No agreement between degradation rates estimated on the basis of mineralization of <sup>14</sup>C-hexadecane and bacterial counts could be observed. The concentration of oil in the oiled sediments did not vary considerably during the experimental period of ten months.
