Growth rates were measured in thin cell suspensions (< 500 cells/m) to prevent the Si conc in the medium from decreasing by > 25% during the period of measurement. 0.5-saturation constants of Si- limited growth were calculated according to the Michaelis-Menten equation. At 3°C, the constant was 0.09 {mu}g-at Si/l and at 10°C, 0.02 {mu}g-at Si/l. In semi-continuous cultures grown for 1 month at Si concs of 0.3-0.4 {mu}g/at Si/l, the mean cell division rates were 80- 100% of the maximum rates recorded at the respective temps.
