Er wordt aangegeven welke de verschillende taken zijn die een havensleepboot moet uitvoeren in een haven. Nadien worden de verschillende types van propellers nader bekeken. In hoofdstuk 5 worden de methoden van sleepbootassistentie toegelicht. Hierop volgend, wordt nagegaan wat de voornaamste krachten zijn die op een sleepboot inwerken. De literatuurstudie eindigt met een beknopt overzicht van de manoeuvreerbaarheid van de verschillende types.<p>In het tweede deel, de vergelijkende studie, wordt aan de hand van een aantal voorbeeldschepen onderzocht welk van de verschillende types het meest interessant is. Vooreerst wordt hiervoor gekeken naar de beschikbare vergelijkingscriteria die tegenwoordig gebruikt worden. Hierop volgen enkele kritische bemerkingen en suggesties om deze vergelijkingscriteria uit te breiden. Ten slotte wordt nog even toegelicht dat er ook nog andere selectiecriteria zijn, die van niet-technische aard zijn maar die wel de doorslag kunnen geven bij de keuze van een bepaald type in de uitbreiding van de bestaande vloot.<p>Ten slotte bevat het derde deel een wiskundige modellering. Eerst wordt hierin uiteengezet wat de werking en opbouw is van de simulator van het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium in Borgerhout (WLH). Indien deze simulator gebruikt wordt, met de sleepboot als eigenlijke schip, is er enkel de module van een Voith sleepboot beschikbaar. Met de rompcoëfficiënten en propellercoëfficiënten voor een ander type is het mogelijk een uitbreiding te maken naar een ASD sleepboot. Ten slotte is er een wiskundig model opgesteld dat toelaat om de essentiële werkingswijzen van een sleepboot, werkend op de conventionele manier of als tractor, met elkaar te
