The description is based on one male, 36 females and 176 larvae. <i>X. basilgoodeyi</i> is close to but differentiated from <i>X. index</i> Thorne & Allen, 1950 and <i>X. diversicaudatum</i> (Micoletzky, 1927) Thorne, 1939 as defined by Goodey, Peacock & Pitcher (1960). Observations on the stylet formation in <i>Xiphinema</i> (cf. Coomans & De Coninck, 1963) and considerations on measurements and relative growth (Coomans & Bracke, 1964) are mainly based on specimens of the species described here.
