In a statistical comparison of these data with Finnegan's data (Canadian Entomologist (90)6 : 348-54, 1958) on the closely related <i>P. approximates</i>, the larvae of <i>P. strobi</i> were significantly smaller in each instar. A 5th instar, not previously reported for <i>P. strobi</i>, was recorded in 40% of the larvae which survived the 4th stage in the 1969 study. Male and female larvae entered the 5th stage in similar percentages. No significant differences in head-capsule width were noted between male and female larvae.
