They were fed Artemia nauplii and maintained at 18 degree C in salinities of 20, 25, 30, 40 and 45 ppt. From these studies, the following conclusions may be made: (1) The duration of individual zoeal stages and overall time for zoeal development is significantly longer, at the 0.1 level, at 20 ppt and 45 ppt, than in intermediate salinities. 1% and 13% reached the 4 zoeal stage at 20 ppt and 45 ppt respectively. (2) At salinities from 25-45ppt there was some variation in the mean duration of 4 zoeal stages, but the overall periods of zoeal development were not significantly different and these salinities are considered favorable for complete zoeal development. (3) Favorable salinities for glaucothoe development were 30 ppt, 35 ppt and 40 ppt with 3%, 7% and 1% of the original 100 zoeae reaching the hermit crab stage. (4) The greatest mortality during development occurred at a salinity of 20 ppt followed by 45 ppt, 25 ppt, 40 ppt, 30 ppt and 35 ppt. (5) Survival of a glucothoe to the hermit crab stage appears to be correlated positively with the percent of time it spends in a snail shell. (6) Although P. alatus is common in the Mediterranean where the salinities are high and stable and P. bernhardus in the Oresund where the salinities are lower and vary over a wide range, both species develop equally well through zoeal stages in a wide range of salinities (20 ppt-35 ppt).","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AMS","StandardTitle":"The effect of salinity on molting and larval development of <i>Pagurus alatus</i> Fabricus reared in the laboratory","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2025-01-13 01:33:57.094223","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":1972,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2025-01-06","DateCreate":"2010-07-12","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":0,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":197262,"PubliDate":1972,"Pagination":"173-187","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"5","Issue":null,"BRefMon":137997,"BRefMonRR":"<b>Battaglia, B.
