A winger 'resting' egg has not previously been recorded in the life history of a marine copepod. This phenomenon is believed to be the mechanism responsible for the spring resurgence of this species following its normal mid-winter disappearance in North America coastal areas and estuaries north of 40 degree latitude. Cold-induced dormancy was also observed in sub-tropical specimens of A. tonsa.
