De haven van Antwerpen is van de Nederlanders afhankelijk voor de toegang. Recentelijk is de discussie weer opgelaaid, omdat de vaargeul in de Westerschelde verbreed en uitgediept moet worden om grotere schepen de haven aan te kunnen laten doen. De milieucompenserende maatregelen die hiervoor noodzakelijk zijn, zijn voor de rekening van de Nederlanders, wat tot verhitte discussies leidt.<p>Naast deze verdieping, speelt er een aantal andere problemen op de Westerschelde. In het kader van het Bachelor Eindwerk is door een viertal studenten een voorstel gedaan om deze problematiek het hoofd te bieden. Middels een dijk tussen Vlissingen en Breskens, met sluizen daarin, wordt de veiligheid in een groot gebied gegarandeerd. Daarnaast bestaat de mogelijkheid een constant hoog peil te handhaven in de Westerschelde, wat de toegang voor de haven van Antwerpen garandeert voor de grootste schepen.<p>Deze peilverhoging zal effect hebben op het hele gebied rond de Westerschelde, maar ook verder op de rivier de Schelde, verder stroomopwaarts van Antwerpen. In dit rapport wordt middels een modellering een voorspelling gedaan van de waterstanden die zich voor zullen gaan doen op de Schelde en haar bijrivieren. Hieruit blijkt dat een peil van 3,00 m NAP (5,33 m TAW) in principe haalbaar is.<p>De gemiddelde waterstand stijgt flink, naar een peil van 5,3 tot 5,5 m TAW, maar dit leidt niet tot hogere hoogwaterstanden. Dit komt doordat in de nieuwe situatie de getijbeweging met een amplitude van 3 meter is weggenomen.<p>Onder omstandigheden met hoge bovenafvoeren zouden zich tussen Dendermonde en Melle problemen kunnen voordoen, maar over precieze waterstanden bestaat onzekerheid.<p>Er kan worden vastgesteld dat er een verschuiving van de oorzaak van hoogwaterproblematiek valt te verwachten. Waar vroeger het getij, in combinatie met opwaaiing, zorgde voor overstromingen bij Antwerpen, zullen onder de nieuwe omstandigheden de bovenafvoeren hierin bepalend worden.
