It has been thought that long-term changes in the dominance of major taxonomic groups can be predicted from these characteristics. However, new analyses show that diversity limits may rise or fall in response to adaptive radiations or extinctions. These changes are idiosyncratic and occur at different times in each taxa. For example, the end-Permian mass extinction permanently reduced the diversity of important, previously dominant groups such as brachiopods and crinoids. The current global crisis may therefore permanently alter the biosphere’s taxonomic composition by changing the rules of evolution.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"The shifting balance of diversity among major marine animal groups","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-06-12 01:31:22.386734","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2010,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2018-02-15","DateCreate":"2010-09-30","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:000281485600032","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1126/science.1189910"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":198930,"PubliDate":2010,"Pagination":"1191-1194","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"329","Issue":"5996","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":43776,"SerRR":"Science (Washington).
