Typical sensitive functions in mussels are byssus and mucus production, shell valve closure and particle clearance rate. Lethal effects of PSP toxins on mussels have also been observed. Similar studies on the effects of DSP toxins are few. During the experiments presented here, we studied the effects of DSP-toxin-producers, <i>Prorocentrum lima</i> on clearance rates in blue mussels. For this purpose, <i>P. lima</i> cells at different concentrations (10<sup>4</sup>, 10<sup>5</sup>, 10<sup>6</sup> cells/l) were included in a diet consisting of a suspension of <i>Isochrysis galbana</i> at 8.10<sup>7</sup> cells/l. The <i>Isochrysis</i> cells were labelled (C<sup>14</sup>) in order to measure the clearance rate. A similar set of experiments with non toxic <i>Prorocentrum micans</i> cells was used as control for the effect of suspension density on filtration rate. After 1 hour of filtration, filtration rates of mussels exposed to 10<sup></sup> cells/liter of <i>P. lima</i> became significantly lower than those measured in the control suspension of <i>P. mican</i>.
