The presence of humic acids at all concentrations tested as well as high concentrations of EDTA (100µM) greatly enhance both growth rates and total cell yields. The presence of chelating substances is thus a main factor controlling <i>P. lima</i> growth. Total cell numbers and growth rates are not significantly different between the two forms of phosphate tested excepted at the limiting concentration (10µM) at which mineral phosphate induces higher growth rates. Lag phases are always longer in presence of glycerophosphate than with mineral phosphate but this difference is suppressed by the presence of humic acids in the medium. Our results confirm the fact, already demonstrated in various conditions and for different strains, that limitation of growth in <i>P. lima</i> induces higher okadaic acid contents per cell in stationary phase.
