Both coastal upwelling/downwelling and wind-stress curl-driven \"open ocean\" upwelling/downwelling are treated in a unified description. Vigorous upwelling zones are found in the eastern Aegean Sea, off the west coast of Greece, and in the Gulf of Lyons.
