The flow in this region, even at slow speeds, can be violent at the length scale of the autonomous service craft, potentially leading to unacceptable motions. We investigate motions of a small, deployed craft as it approaches the host ship under a range of scenarios, including sea states and wave incidence. Both vehicles respond to ambient conditions and are controlled by autopilots. The CFD code CFDShip-Iowa is used for the computations, which is a semicoupled two-phase level set RANS/DES solver with extensive motion and multi-ship interaction capabilities. The objective of the study is to obtain conditions under which safe operation is achieved throughout the time history of the approach.
