En moins de 10 ans, l'espèce a occupé presque toutes les eaux oligohalines des Pays-Bas. Avant l'introduction de G. tigrinus ces eaux étaient occupées par G. d. duebenii, G. zaddachi ou G. p. pulex. G. tigrinus a rapidement remplacé ces espèces indigènes dans la plupart des eaux où elles étaient communes auparavant. La question posée est de savoir comment cette espèce nouvellement introduite peut être compétitive avec un tel succès, aux dépens des espèces indigènes. Les réponses à cette question ont été recherchées dans des différences relatives aux tolérances de salinité, aux préférences de salinité, au cycle de reproduction, à la période d'incubation des oeufs, et au temps nécessaire pour atteindre la maturité sexuelle. Il a été montré que des différences dans les cycles de reproduction (période d'incubation des oeufs plus courte et temps plus court pour atteindre la maturité sexuelle) confèrent à G. tigrinus une capacité de reproduction beaucoup plus grande que celle de chacune des trois autres espèces, dans des eaux oligohalines. Par suite de cette capacité de reproduction plus importante, G. tigrinus surpassera en nombre les trois espèces indigènes et les remplacera donc rapidement.
