Both the Meuse and its connecting canals are known as reservoirs of alien macro-invertebrates. Until now 9 alien species have been found in ditches and ponds in the eastern part of the study area: <i>Girardia tigrina, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Dreissena polymorpha, Corbicula fluminea, Dikerogammarus villosus, Echinogammarus berilloni, Chelicorophium curvispinum, Atyaëphyra desmarest</i> and <i>Orconectes limosus. C. fluminea, D. villosus</i> and <i>C. curvispinum</i> are recent invaders (after 1990). The discovery of <i>D. Villosus</i> confirms its rapid spread to the northern part of Belgium. Only <i>P. antipodarum</i> and <i>O. limosus</i> are well established in both ditches and ponds.
